Memorial Park-Jacksonville, Florida

Steamy hot days in the south call for shady and water side parks to cool off. That’s what took me to Memorial Park, dedicated in 1924 to the fallen of world war of 1914-1918. On the day of this walk the recorded temperature was 104 Fahrenheit or 40 Celsius.

The park is located in the Historic Riverside neighborhood. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This makes it the 3rd oldest park in the city.

Along with various civic leaders, planner of the park also worked with the renowned Olmstead Brothers to design the park. The Olmsteads designed parks coast to coast including the world famous New York City Central Park.

“Life” the bronze sculpture created by Charles Adrian Pillars rises up above the ground. A young man is standing above the globe with huge wings. Displaying victory over chaos. The memorial is dedicated to the fallen of World War 1.

The bronze eagles were added later:

The park borders the St. John’s River at one of its widest points. The St. Johns River is the longest river in the state of Florida and flows north.

Thank you for stopping by and I hope you are enjoying the sites of Florida and its beautiful sunshine.
