A Place Of Peace, Prayer, And Natural Beauty

The Grotto-Portland, Oregon

The National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother

A National Sanctuary in Portland Oregon

I just love when I venture out for the day, without any specific plans, and stumble across a gem of a park like this. The Grotto in Portland is a 62 acre sanctuary founded in 1924 by Servite Fr, Ambrose Mayer. It is a Roman Catholic ministry of the Order of Friar Servants of Mary.

The lower level is free to the public and has paved walking trails, bordered by flowering trees, and the magnificent Grotto.

The property is the site of an old quarry. The Grotto alter is carved out of a 110 foot high cliff and is a place of peace and reflection for people.

Along the trails sculptures, prayer stops, and religious monuments stand.

Prayers for the intercession of St. Peregrine for healing.

On the second level, on a clear day you can see snowcapped Mt. Hood.

Here’s a few tips if you plan to visit:

The Grotto is in a residential area in NE Portland. They have a parking lot onsite.

The only food offered is in snack machines.

The lower lever is at no cost, there is a fee for the second level.

Our visit was at the end of April. The weather was perfect, and the flowers were beautiful.

Restrooms are available.

A gift and souvenir shop was open.
