Tuscacora Indian Monument-Lewiston, New York
During the war of 1812 the Tuscarora Indians risked their own lives by coming to the aid of the local villagers. British troops raided and burnt the village in retaliation for the American burning of Newark, now known as Niagara on the Lake. The raid was a success but many of the locals managed to escape with the help of their alliance with the Tuscarora tribe. Led by Chief Longbeard the warriors positioned themselves on the Niagara embankment and alerted the locals of the incoming troops. As villagers try to flee the warriors created a buffer and intervened directly to stop the massacre.
The Tuscarora Heroes Monument was dedicated in 2013. The facial expressions capture the intense moment and I found it to be one of the most captivating bronze sculptures I have ever seen.
The life size bronze statues feature a woman fleeing with a baby, protected by two Tuscarora warriors. The monument was created by renowned sculptor Susan Geissler a Lewiston resident.
Lewiston NY is located along the American side of the Niagara River, north of Niagara Falls.
