The White Stag Building-Old Town-Portland, Oregon

The White Stag building, originally known as the Hirsch-Weis building was constructed in 1907. It opened as the Willamette Tent and Awning which later became the White Stag Company. The company manufactured canvas materials and later clothing for mill and lumber workers.

During this era buildings featured ground floor commercial spaces, often with lodging offered above to house laborers.

In 2006 a major restoration program began and renovations in line with historic guidelines took place. The renovations incorporated ” Green building’ features. Restoring the historic building using recycled materials, natural lighting, rainwater for flushing toilets are just some examples. Today the building is in use by the University of Oregon.

The building is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

  1. That’s a beautiful building. I’m glad they kept those wonderful doors at that lovely entrance. It’s so good to see buildings like this be preserved and modernized without losing the character and charm they brought to the city.
