A Glimpse into Florida’s First Electrified Hotel

Ponce De Leon Hotel-Saint Augustine, Florida

The first in a series of luxury hotels along Florida’s coast built by millionaire Henry M. Flagler. It is also one of the nations first electrified buildings. Four thousand electric light bulbs supplied by Thomas Edison were installed. Guests were not yet acquainted with this new way of lighting and turned the bulbs off in their rooms.

Built in 1885 by Henry M. Flagler

On opening day the hotel had only one private bath which was in the room of Henry M. Flagler.

All others used public baths which was normal for that period of time.
