Beaufort County South Carolina

Shells are collected by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. The recycled shells get placed back in to local waterways to rebuild reefs. The reefs become a natural habitat to produce young oysters, and protect the coastline.

ON New York’s Long Island (where I grew up) the oyster industry was booming in the 1800s. Literally tons of oysters were harvested from the waters around the Island. The oyster shells were used to pave roads on the Island and in a few places, you can still see the remnants of oyster shells on old roads.
