Fishing Cooperative Tribute Mural

Squire Pope Community Park-Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

Residents of the nearby Gullah neighborhoods have been fishing, shrimping and crabbing on Hilton Head Island since the 1860’s.

The mural celebrates a 42 foot shrimp trawler named “The Capt Dave “. The boat sailed to Washington D.C. in 1970. On board were a group of local fisherman and businessmen who delivered a petition with 45,000 signatures to protest a petrochemical plant at nearby Victoria Bluff. The trip was a success and their efforts preserved the island’s natural resources.

Local African American contemporary artist Amiri Farris paints a mural that pays tribute to Black fishermen that founded Hilton Head Island’s Fishing Cooperative. The mural was unveiled on May 22, 2024.
