The Municipal Elevator in Oregon City, Oregon
This sure beats walking up over 700 stairs to take a stroll around the neighborhood. In 1915 a water pressured elevator was installed in Oregon City to connect the downtown area to the expanding city neighborhoods 90 feet above. The hydraulic system when in use caused residents to have very low water pressure, so in 1924 the system was converted to electricity. Once again, in 1955 a new elevator that stands today was built. It is estimated that an average of 800 people a day take the 15 second rise to the top. The summer months are the busiest as tourists enjoy the overhead view of the city.
