Banyan Trees And The Aerial Root System

St. Petersburg Florida

Along Beach Drive on the waterfront of the city you’ll notice an extraordinary work of nature.

The banyan tree is not native to Florida and was imported in 1925 as a gift from Harvey Firestone to Thomas Edison. The tree provides shade along the walkway with its thick tangle of roots.

The aerial roots extend from the branches hang downward and then enter the soil. The roots are also a support for the huge tree that always grows outward.

Thank you for stopping by and I hope you are enjoying the sites of the Southeast Coastal areas.
