First American in Space

Rear Admiral Shepard holds the distinctive honor of being the first American to travel into space. On May 5, 1961 he piloted the Freedom 7, the first American human spaceflight. Ten years later on Apollo 14 mission to the moon he set aside a few minutes for his favorite hobby golf. Astronaut Alan Shepard marked another first in history by being the first to hit golf balls on the moon.
