If you were around in 1969 perhaps you were studying the cover of an Abbey Road album or spinning the Beatles White Album song “number 9” backwards. Call it a conspiracy theory or a hoax, but the word on the street was “Paul is dead”.
As the story goes Paul had died and was replaced by a look alike. A photo of the four Beatles crossing the road showed Paul barefoot, and Ringo and John dressed respectively in black and white.

Years later in an interview with CNN McCartney says it was just hot.
βIt was a very hot day and I happened to be wearing sandals like I am today so I just kicked them off because it was so hot we went across barefoot,β he explained. βThere was no special meaning.β
