Jail On Wheels-Portable Convict Car

History Walk Marker in St. Augustine, St. Johns County, Florida

Convict cages housed prisoners at night in a well ventilated, safe, and comfortable camp. The portable jails pulled by mules moved workers from one road work site to another.

The interior included bunks, heater, vent flu, and a toilet.

Other options for housing convicts working on the “chain gangs” was the use of rail cars, and tool sheds near the job sites.
