During the Great Depression the Hobo community created a code for newcomers to town.
The signs welcomed, offered security warnings, and guided a person to food or shelter.
Sidewalks, buildings, posts, bridges, and fences were some of the common places the signs were placed. The signs are also referred to as “The code for the road”.
