The Lettered Olive

Fish Haul on Port Royal Sound-Hilton Head Island

I have been on the hunt for the lettered olive shell all summer. It has distinct features such as a smooth finish, oblong shape, and lettered markings.

Here are some of the shells I took a close look at today:

And then I stumbled across a few creepy looking animals or animal parts:

The things that look like blobs are called “sea pork”, and they float around and filter water.

The crab is a “blue crab” and you can eat them. Locals put trap baskets out to catch them. They make delicious stew.

Here is a photo of the beach. Fish Haul is one of my favorites because it’s on the Port Royal Sound. Most of the hotels and tourist areas are on the Atlantic Ocean, so this is mostly know to locals. The great thing about the beach is that you can visit the same spot many times but each visit is full of its’ own fun finds.

Last, I don’t want to leave you hanging regarding the Lettered Olive Shell, but after months of searching I found one! So, today was a good day 🙂
