Historical Site on St. Helena Island

Before we take our walk on the grounds of the Penn Center on St. Helena Island I would like to take a minute to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

I made a quick stop in Frogmore, a small area of the island that offers dining, lodging, shopping, and a community park where the monument is located.

My next stop was the Penn Center, here is a photo of the information card in the welcome center. You can also purchase regional cookbooks featuring Gullah recipes, and locally made hand weaved baskets in the center.

Since the weather was warm and sunny I decided to walk the grounds and take a pass on the indoor museum.

Thanks for dropping in, I hoped you enjoyed this bit of history and the serene beauty and preservation of coastal South Carolina.

  1. I find it enlightening to read the Historical Marker for the Penn School, founded for Black Students in 1862 and the fact I lived in Beaufort, 1967. In 1967 there were still two high schools in Beaufort, one of which was exclusively for Black Students. The below web site, although lengthy, gives the history of desegregation in Beaufort, SC, should anyone be interested. Some clocks move so slowly. May we all enjoy this day, thank you, Dr. Martin Luther King.

  2. I think I’d have done the same, Alice 🙂 🙂 And King was a fine man. If we all could live by his creed… Many thanks for sharing.
