A walk on Queen Street

Niagara on the Lake, Ontario, Canada

Known by various names since its first settlers around 1780, this beautiful town sitting on the bank of Lake Ontario is a vibrant community.  Wide streets displaying floral gardens, and buildings constructed in the British classical tradition from the years 1815-1859 offers a well-preserved look at a 19th-century living.

 

During the summer months, it gets quite crowded but the historic area is easy to park and walk. To have enough time to look at both the shopping and the residential area I would plan to spend at least 1 full day.   You can walk 2 short blocks to Lake Ontario the intake of the Niagara River after it falls.

 

If you are a wine connoisseur you may want to consider taking a wine tasting tour of the many vineyards in the area. There are several restaurants, bakeries, hotels, parks, and historic churches to view.

 

Niagara on the lake is 22 miles north of Niagara Falls Ontario.  I would suggest taking the Niagara Parkway from the Falls.  There are many attractions and scenic look out points along the way.  The QEW is an expressway and may get you there a few minutes faster but you will miss the scenery of the Niagara Gorge and many other attractions and historical sites along the way.

A few things to keep in mind:

There are 3 bridges from the USA closeby, the Peace Bridge from Buffalo NY, the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls and the Queenston-Lewiston Bridge which is the closet.

You will need a passport to enter Canada, and go through a customs agent.

Parking meters  take a credit card but it is still easier to exchange money at the border.

Most of the stores will take money from the USA but your change may be in Canadian money.

Take a minute to check out the exchange rate so you will know what you are paying for items.

Directional signs are in the metric system. Signs may be in English or French.

Bathrooms/restrooms are called “washrooms”

Touring buses and shuttles run from Niagara Falls to Niagara on the Lake.

 

The closest airports are Buffalo Niagara International Airport, (40 miles),  Toronto Pearson International Airport (79 miles)
