I made quick stop this morning to walk the nature trail and give myself an excuse to stay off the treadmill today. December is a great month in coastal South Carolina because the humidity is gone, the morning temperature was a chilly 37º, and the pesty mosquitos and gnats are in hiding. I walked the main 3.5 mile trail that borders the salt marsh. The serene setting enables me to think about what it must have been like to habitat and farm this island hundred of years ago.
I’ll make another trip back there this spring and try to catch some of natures beautiful animals and plants that don’t like the chilly days….But for now here is some scenery
For travelers on the I95 exit SC #8 (hwy 278) go east 20 miles towards Hilton Head Island. As you get to the bridge for the island you will see the sign for Pinckney Island on your left. It’s free and parking is easy. There are no restrooms or snack shops on the island so make a stop along the way because you will want to stay awhile and scout out the trails. Bikes, hiking and salt water fishing is allowed in the estuarine.
