Flagler Beach Florida-Historic Hwy A1A
One of the most scenic drives on the east coast of the US is Florida Hwy A1A. It is a coastal drive that goes through many popular beach resort communities as well as miles of undisturbed coastline. Running north and south it is the best alternative to driving on the I95.
If you choose this route while traveling north to south in Florida you can get on in Amelia Island and follow through to Miami. If your trip includes the Florida Keys when you reach Miami follow signs to US1 and that will take get you to Key West.
Expect to cross many bridges as the road at times goes inland. Also, you will have an option of using the St. Johns River Ferry or a bridge in the Jacksonville area, and I suggest riding the ferry. There are a few great seafood restaurants in Mayport and they serve shrimp coming right off the boats. Really fresh and delicious.
There are many beaches along the way where you can drench yourself in the warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean. In the Miami Beach area, water can be 70º during the month of February. Accommodations are all along the way. If your travel dates are flexible August is a quiet month on the roads with good hotel prices.
Happy Travels, bring an extra piece of luggage and pack up some of Florida’s sunshine as a souvenir
